Uses and Unconsidered Aspects of Geographic Data in OSINT Investigations

Digital technology has provided a deluge of open data, enabling amateur and professional investigators alike to not only explore topics such as the territorial advance of armed conflicts, but also to document the ecocidal actions of states and companies, and to expose police violence and the illegal deportation of asylum seekers. This open-source research methodology is known as OSINT, or Open Source INTelligence. It encompasses investigations based on all freely accessible online data. This chapter draws on journalistic investigations and Non-Governmental Organisation reports to examine the different ways of investigating with geographic data and using it in open source investigations Journalism is not the only truth regime in which OSINT investigations and digital maps have a role to play. The use of maps also responds to certain logics and injunctions issued by legal authorities.
